Design your cushions in The Fabric Room Design Studio

The The Fabric Room Design Studio lets you design cushions, pillows, seat pads and bolsters online. Choose the shape, enter your measurements, pick fabric and colour, and add details such as piping or ties. Then send the design to us for a price.

It is the quickest way to price a simple set, such as seat pads for dining chairs or scatter cushions for a sofa. For complex shapes, like an angled window seat or a full majlis, we usually come and measure, then confirm the design with you in writing.

Sofa cushions and chair cushions

Sofa cushions are the most common reason people contact us. When seats go flat, the frame and fabric are often fine, and new cushions bring the sofa back. We replace foam to the original shape, or improve on it, and make new covers if needed.

Chair cushions cover dining chair seat pads, kitchen stool pads, armchair seats and rocking chair cushions. Seat pads are usually 3 to 5 cm deep, with ties or a non slip base so they stay in place.

Which foam should a seat cushion use?

Seat foam is commonly 30 to 40 kg per cubic metre for durability, with softer foam or fibre for back cushions. A fibre or feather wrap adds a softer top. Our foam guide explains grades, and foam replacement covers refilling existing cushions.

Cushion sizes, shapes and finishes

Because every cushion is cut to order, size is set by your seat, not a catalogue. Our cushion size guide lists common sizes and how to measure.

• Shapes. Square, rectangle, round, bolster, angled, notched around posts and curved to fit bays.
• Edges. Box edge with a straight side, knife edge with a tapered side, or a bullnose front edge.
• Piping. Self or contrast piping, or plain seams.
• Closures. Concealed zips so covers can be removed for cleaning.
• Ties and bases. Ties for chairs, non slip bases for benches and window seats.
• Buttoning. Deep buttons on window seats and floor cushions to stop the filling shifting.

Fabrics for cushions in Dubai homes

Seat cushions take more wear than scatter cushions, so fabric choice depends on the cushion. For seats used every day, choose a fabric with a Martindale rating of 25,000 or more. Scatter cushions can use more delicate fabrics such as silk, fine linen or embroidered textiles.

For window seats in strong sun, choose solution dyed or high light fastness fabrics, since Dubai sun fades colour quickly through glass. Window seat, bench and floor cushions

These are the cushions that rarely come in a standard size. A window seat in a Dubai villa may be 2.4 m long with angled ends. A dining banquette may wrap a corner. A majlis may run around three walls of a room.

Window seat cushions

We make a template of the seat where the shape is irregular, so angled ends and curves fit exactly. Firm foam, usually 5 to 10 cm deep, keeps the seat level, and buttoning stops the filling shifting. Pair with a matching roman blind for a finished window.

Bench cushions

Dining and hallway bench cushions need a firm seat and a non slip base or ties. Long benches can be made in one piece or in sections that are easier to remove and clean.

Floor and majlis cushions

Majlis seating needs seat cushions that hold their shape under heavy use, with back cushions and bolsters sized to the wall. We plan the full run so joins fall in sensible places and patterns align.
