Wall mounted headboard or upholstered bed?

A wall mounted headboard is fixed to the wall on a hidden cleat, so the bed can stay as it is. It is the quickest way to change a room and the easiest to fit to an existing bed. It also allows extra width, so the headboard can run behind the bedside tables.

An upholstered bed has the headboard, side rails and footboard all covered in matching fabric. It suits clients who are replacing the bed anyway. We make upholstered beds in standard Dubai sizes such as queen and king, and to custom sizes for built in alcoves. Storage beds with a lifting base are possible on request.

Fabrics, padding and details for an upholstered headboard

Headboards take less wear than a sofa, so you can choose more delicate fabrics than you would for daily seating. They do take hair oils and leaning, so some care pays off.

• Velvet. Rich colour and depth. A favourite for channelled and buttoned designs.
• Linen and linen blends. Calm and textured, good in coastal and neutral schemes.
• Bouclé. Soft and sculptural on curved shapes.
• Performance fabrics. Easier to clean, useful in children's rooms and rentals.
• Leather. Full grain or top grain for a tailored finish.
• Padding. Foam depth from slim to deeply padded, often with a fibre wrap for softness.
• Details. Piping, contrast welts, nailhead trim, timber plinths or integrated reading lights.

How big should a headboard be?

Width usually matches the bed or extends past it. Matching the bed is neat and simple. Extending 15 to 30 cm beyond each side, or across the bedside tables, makes the bed feel grander and anchors the furniture as one group.

Height depends on the ceiling and the look. A headboard standing about 50 to 70 cm above the mattress is comfortable to lean on. In double height rooms, a much taller headboard balances the space. We measure the mattress height, ceiling, sockets and switches at the visit so nothing clashes.

Depth matters too. A slim panel of 5 to 8 cm suits a minimal room, while a deeply padded headboard of 10 cm or more feels softer and casts a stronger shadow line. Wing or wraparound designs need extra space either side, which we check against bedside tables and doors.

A headboard looks simple, but small errors show. A panel a few centimetres too low hides behind the pillows. Piping that wanders is visible from the door. A fixing that misses a stud lets the headboard knock against the wall.
