What kinds of floor cushions do we make?

Floor cushions cover a wide range of pieces, and most rooms work best with a planned set rather than a single cushion. A common set is four to six seat cushions in one size, a few larger lounging cushions and matching back cushions that lean against the wall, all cut from the same fabric so they look intentional when laid out. These are the pieces we are asked for most:

• Square floor cushions to sit on, often in sets for a living room or majlis
• Round floor cushions for reading corners, children's rooms and meditation
• Big floor cushions and floor mattresses for lounging or watching films
• Majlis cushions: loose seat pads, back cushions and arm cushions that sit along a wall
• Children's floor cushions with soft edges and tough, washable covers
• Outdoor floor cushions for terraces, roofs and covered courtyards

Floor cushion sizes and thickness

A floor cushion needs to be thicker and firmer than a sofa cushion, because there is nothing underneath it. Too thin and you feel the tiles. Too soft and you sink to the floor. The sizes below are typical starting points, and we make any size you need.

Floor seating cushions or a full majlis?

If you want seating that runs continuously around the walls with fitted corners, a made to measure majlis is the better route. Floor cushions suit rooms that need flexible seating, or homes that want to add to an existing majlis for large gatherings.

Fills and construction for floor seating cushions

Floor seating cushions need a firm core. For seat style cushions we use high density foam, commonly 35 to 40 kg per cubic metre, wrapped in polyester fibre so the top is soft and the edges round off. For lounging cushions and floor pillows, a fibre fill or a foam core with a thick fibre wrap gives a softer, more relaxed sit.

Construction changes how a cushion looks and lasts. Box cushions with a gusset hold a crisp shape. Hand tufted cushions, with buttons or tufts stitched through both faces, keep fibre fills from shifting and give a traditional look. Side handles make larger cushions easier to move and stack, and every cover has a concealed zip so it comes off for cleaning.

If the cushions will be stacked when not in use, we keep them to one or two sizes with flat faces so the stack sits square, and we avoid tufting on faces that press together, which can mark lighter fabrics over time.

Fabrics for floor cushions and majlis cushions

Floor cushions are sat on, leaned on and dragged across the floor, so we use upholstery weight fabric with a Martindale rating of 25,000 or more. Woven jacquards, velvets and chenilles suit majlis cushions and formal rooms. Cotton canvas, linen blends and performance weaves suit family rooms and playrooms, where covers need washing often. Arabic floor cushions often use rich colours with contrast piping or tassels, and we can make those details to order.

Floor cushions in Dubai homes

Floor seating is part of daily life in many Dubai homes. Families gather on the floor around food, children play and nap on floor cushions, and extra seating is needed fast during Ramadan, Eid and family visits. A set of floor cushions that stacks neatly in a corner or a cupboard solves that without filling the room with chairs.

In playrooms we recommend soft, rounded edges, washable covers in darker or patterned fabrics, and medium firmness so the cushions are safe to climb on. On sunny terraces, store floor cushions or cover them when not in use to protect them from dust and sand.
