Upholstery means everything under and including the cover: the frame, the webbing or springs, the foam and wadding, and the fabric or leather on top. Good upholstery is judged as much by what you cannot see as by the finish.

Reupholstery or a new bespoke piece?

If you love the shape and the frame is sound, reupholstery is usually the better value. A good hardwood frame can be stripped, rewebbed, refoamed and recovered so it sits and looks like new. Our guide on when to reupholster walks through the checks we make.

If the piece never suited the room, or the frame is weak, a new bespoke sofa or headboard made to your measurements will serve you better. We help you decide honestly at the home visit, and we only recommend reupholstery when the frame justifies it.

Upholstery fabrics and materials for Dubai homes

Fabric choice is where most upholstery succeeds or fails. We bring a fabric library to every visit and match each choice to how the piece will be used.

• Rub count. Martindale ratings of 15,000 to 25,000 suit general domestic use, 25,000 plus suits heavy daily use, and 40,000 plus is commercial grade. Family sofas in Dubai villas usually belong in the 25,000 plus band.
• Sun. Rooms with large south or west facing glass need fabrics with good light fastness, or solution dyed yarns that resist fading.
• Dust and sand. Tighter weaves and performance velvets shed dust more easily than loose bouclé or open linen.
• Pets and children. Performance fabrics with stain resistant finishes, and colours that forgive marks.
• Foam. Seats are usually 30 to 40 kg per cubic metre high density foam, with softer foam or fibre for backs. Our foam replacement page explains the grades.
• Leather. Full grain and top grain leathers wear well. Bonded leather tends to flake in Dubai heat and we do not recommend it.
