Why do outdoor cushions in Dubai fail early?
Most outdoor cushions sold in Dubai are made for milder climates. The usual problems are fading, brittle fabric, foam that turns yellow and crumbles, and covers that hold moisture and smell after humid nights. Cheap cushions often use printed polyester, which fades quickly in strong sun, and standard upholstery foam, which soaks up water like a sponge.
Three things decide how long outdoor cushions last here: the fabric, the foam and the construction. Getting all three right costs more at the start but avoids replacing cushions every season. Our outdoor cushions are specified with all three in writing.
Which fabric is best for outdoor cushions?
For outdoor cushions in Dubai, the most important word on a fabric label is solution dyed. In solution dyed fibres, the colour is added to the liquid before the fibre is formed, so colour runs right through each strand rather than sitting on the surface. This is why solution dyed acrylic and olefin resist UV fading far better than printed or piece dyed fabrics.
| Fabric | UV fade resistance | Feel | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solution dyed acrylic | Very good | Soft, close to indoor fabric | The benchmark for premium outdoor cushions, water repellent finish |
| Solution dyed olefin (polypropylene) | Very good | Slightly crisper | Resists staining and mildew, dries fast |
| Solution dyed polyester | Good | Smooth | Better than printed polyester, less fade resistant than acrylic |
| Printed or piece dyed polyester | Poor to fair | Varies | Fades fast in direct sun, best avoided for exposed seating |
| PVC coated mesh | Good | Firm, open weave | Used for slings and drainage panels rather than cushion tops |
Light or dark colours outdoors?
Dark colours get noticeably hotter to sit on in direct sun, while very light colours show dust and sand. Mid tones such as stone, sand, taupe, olive and soft grey are the most forgiving on a Dubai terrace. Stripes and textured weaves hide marks well.
Quick dry foam and what goes inside
Standard foam traps water. After a garden sprinkler, a rare rain shower or heavy dew, it stays damp for days, which leads to mildew and smell. Reticulated quick dry foam has an open cell structure, so water passes straight through and drains out of the bottom of the cushion.
For back cushions and scatter cushions outdoors, we use quick dry fibre fill rather than feather. Feather holds moisture and is not suitable outside. On waterproof outdoor bench cushions, a mesh base panel lets water escape while the top fabric repels it.
- Seat cushions: reticulated quick dry foam, often wrapped in outdoor fibre for a softer top
- Back cushions: quick dry polyester fibre in an inner case
- Sun loungers: 5 to 10 cm quick dry foam, cut to the frame
- Bench and swing seats: quick dry foam with a mesh base and ties

Construction details that matter
Good fabric and foam can still fail if the cushion is badly made. Ordinary polyester thread breaks down in strong sun long before the fabric does, so seams split. Ask for UV resistant thread. Zips should be plastic or coated, as plain metal corrodes in coastal air.
Removable zipped covers let you wash the fabric and replace covers later without new foam. Ties or hook and loop tabs stop chair cushions blowing away in a shamal wind. Piping looks crisp but adds a seam that can hold sand, so a plain knife edge or box edge is often more practical for heavily used outdoor chair cushions.
How to care for outdoor cushions in Dubai
Regular light care keeps outdoor furniture cushions looking right far longer than occasional deep cleaning. The aim is to remove sand before it grinds into the weave and to let cushions dry fully after any wetting.
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Weekly | Brush off dust with a soft brush, then turn and flip cushions to spread wear and fading |
| After a sandstorm | Shake cushions outside, brush along the weave, vacuum seams with a brush head |
| After spills | Blot, then sponge with mild soap and lukewarm water, rinse with fresh water and air dry |
| Monthly in summer | Rinse covers with fresh water to remove salt and fine dust, dry on edge in shade |
| Before storage | Clean and dry completely, never store damp |
Avoid these common mistakes
Do not pressure wash outdoor fabric at close range, as it damages the water repellent finish and forces water into the foam. Do not tumble dry covers. Do not leave cushions lying flat after rain; stand them on edge so the foam drains.
Summer heat and storage
From June to September, many terraces in Dubai are barely used during the day. Leaving cushions out in full sun for months shortens their life even with the best fabric. If you use the space only in the evenings, store cushions during the day or cover the furniture.
Storage boxes should be ventilated and kept in shade. A sealed box in direct sun traps heat and humidity, which is a recipe for mildew. In coastal communities with heavy summer humidity, a dry indoor store room is better. Breathable furniture covers are better than plastic sheeting, which traps condensation.
Outdoor cushions for pools, terraces and roof gardens
Pool side cushions face chlorinated or salt water, sun cream and wet swimwear. Choose solution dyed fabrics with good stain resistance and rinse them with fresh water often. Sun lounger cushions should be firm enough not to sag between slats, usually 5 to 10 cm of quick dry foam.
Roof gardens and high floor balconies catch strong wind. Heavier cushions, ties and fitted shapes help. Covered terraces and pergolas allow a wider choice, including outdoor velvets and textured weaves. For restaurants and hotel terraces, commercial grade fabrics with higher rub counts are worth specifying.

Outdoor chair cushions and dining seat pads
Outdoor chair cushions take the most wear because they are moved, sat on and left out every day. For dining chairs, a 3 to 5 cm seat pad in quick dry foam with ties at the back corners is the practical choice. Lounge chairs need deeper seat cushions of 10 to 15 cm plus a back cushion.
Cane, rattan and woven chairs have slightly irregular seats, so we template each one rather than working from a single measurement. A cushion that hangs over the front edge looks sloppy and wears faster. A cushion cut 1 cm inside the seat edge looks tailored and lasts longer.
Choosing an outdoor sofa cushion set
An outdoor sofa cushion set usually combines seat cushions, back cushions and a few scatter cushions. Keep the seat and back fabric plain and durable, then add pattern and colour through scatter cushions, which are cheaper to change when they fade or you want a new look.
Match firmness to use. Family terraces and majlis style outdoor seating benefit from firmer foam that does not sink after hours of sitting. A cushion with a soft fibre wrap over quick dry foam gives comfort on top and support underneath. Our fabric guide explains how outdoor ranges compare.

Replacing cushions on existing outdoor furniture
Good frames in teak, aluminium or synthetic rattan often outlast their cushions by years. Replacing the cushions alone is usually far better value than new furniture. We measure each frame, template curved or angled seats and make outdoor cushion covers and foam to fit.
Price depends on fabric grade, foam thickness, the number of cushions and finishing details such as piping or ties. We quote in writing within 24 hours of a home visit. See how we price or book a visit.
