What makes a good window seat cushion?

Three things separate a window seat cushion that looks built in from one that looks bought. It fits the seat exactly, with the edges pressed lightly against the walls. It is thick and firm enough to sit on for an hour without feeling the board underneath. And it stays where it is, without creeping forward every time someone sits down.

We make most window seat cushions as box cushions, with a flat top, a flat base and a separate side panel, usually piped along both edges. The box shape gives the crisp, tailored line that suits a built in seat. For a softer look, a knife edge cushion with a tapered side works on shallow seats.

Many built in window seats hide storage under a hinged lid. In that case we split the cushion to match the lid, or fix it to the lid with hook and loop strips, so you can lift the lid without moving the whole cushion. Tell us about any storage on the visit and we will plan the sections around it.

Custom window seat cushions cut to a template

Very few window seats in Dubai homes are a simple rectangle. Bay windows have angled ends, some seats curve around a column, and others have notches for pipes, sockets or air conditioning grilles. Measuring with a tape alone often leaves a gap at the wall.

So for custom window seat cushions we make a template of the seat on the home visit, tracing the exact outline including every angle and notch. The foam and covers are cut to that template, so the finished cushion drops into place. Long seats are split into two or three sections with joins placed to line up with mullions or the centre of the window, which also makes covers easier to remove. Each section is labelled so it always goes back in the same place.

Foam, fill and grip

Thin cushions need firmer foam, because there is less depth to absorb your weight. We use high density foam, commonly 30 to 40 kg per cubic metre for seats, with a polyester fibre wrap to round the edges and help the cover sit smoothly. For a softer top on a deeper cushion, a feather and fibre wrap gives a relaxed, slightly sunken look. Learn more in our foam replacement page.

To stop sliding, we can add a non slip base fabric, hook and loop strips fixed to the seat, or fabric ties around a frame or leg. Every cover has a concealed zip along the back edge so it lifts off the foam for cleaning without the zip showing from the room.

Fabrics that cope with sun at the window

A window seat sits in the brightest spot in the room. In Dubai that means hours of direct sun, which fades and weakens many fabrics within a year or two. For seats that catch the sun, we recommend solution dyed acrylic or olefin, where colour runs through the fibre and resists UV fading, or a performance weave rated for strong light. In shaded rooms, cottons, linens and velvets are fine.

For durability, choose a Martindale rating of at least 15,000 to 25,000 for general domestic use, and more if children use the seat as a play space. Pale colours show less fading over time than strong darks. Piping in a contrast colour defines the edge. Matching back cushions, bolsters at each end and scatter cushions finish the seat and make it comfortable to lean against the glass or wall. Window seat cushions in Dubai homes

Window seats are more common in Dubai villas than people expect: bay windows in bedrooms, built in benches on staircase landings, seats under the window in children's rooms and playrooms, and long banquettes beside the glass in family rooms. They often become the favourite seat in the house, so they are worth getting right.

If your seat is in a child's room, a 7.5 or 10 cm cushion with rounded piping is safer and softer than a hard edged box. For an alcove that doubles as a guest bed, we make a firmer, thicker cushion in sections that sits flat. If the window above needs dressing too, a roman blind in the same or a coordinating fabric completes the look.
