In shortScatter cushions, also called throw pillows or decorative cushions, are the smaller loose cushions placed on sofas, chairs and beds. The Fabric Room makes scatter cushions in Dubai and custom cushion covers to any size, with a choice of insert, closure and edge finish. Design them in The Fabric Room Design Studio or book a home visit.

What scatter cushions and covers do we make?

We make complete decorative cushions, cover and insert together, in square, rectangular, lumbar and round shapes, plus bolsters for sofas, beds and window seats. We also make cushion covers on their own, cut to fit inserts you already have, which is the most economical way to refresh a room or swap colours with the seasons.

Covers can be single fabric, two sided with a different fabric on the back, or panelled. Patterned fabrics are centred so the motif sits in the middle of every cushion, and stripes are matched across seams. We can also make cushions from the same fabric as your curtains, roman blinds or reupholstered furniture so the room ties together.

Bolsters deserve a mention. A firm round bolster at each arm of a sofa or the ends of a day bed gives support and a finished, tailored line. We make them with piped ends, gathered ends finished with a button, or flat ends, filled with firm foam or tightly packed fibre.

Scatter cushion sizes and how to fill them

Size changes the look more than people expect. On a deep sofa, 45 cm cushions can look lost. On a small armchair, 60 cm cushions take over. The table gives common sizes and where they work.

Why the insert should be larger than the cover

For a full, plump cushion, the insert should be about 2.5 to 5 cm larger than the cover in each direction. A 45 cm cover with a 50 cm insert fills the corners and holds its shape. An insert the same size as the cover looks flat and baggy within weeks. We size every insert to its cover by default.

Choosing inserts: feather, down or fibre

Duck feather inserts give a soft, heavy cushion that holds a chop in the top and reshapes when you plump it. A feather and down mix is lighter and softer still. Polyester fibre inserts are lighter, hold their shape without plumping and suit anyone sensitive to feathers, though they flatten sooner than feather. Microfibre inserts sit between the two, with a soft, feather like feel and no feathers at all.

In a busy family room we often suggest fibre or microfibre for cushions that get thrown around, and feather for a sofa that is styled more carefully. Our cushion size guide explains insert sizing in more detail.

Feather inserts are sewn into a tightly woven, featherproof inner casing so quills do not work through the cover. This matters most with fine fabrics such as silk blends and thin linens, where a cheap casing lets feathers poke through within months.

Custom cushion covers: closures, edges and fabrics

Custom cushion covers are where most of the design choices sit. These are the options we make:

  • Closures: a concealed zip along the bottom edge, an envelope back, or a button back as a feature
  • Edges: plain knife edge, single or contrast piping, a flat flange border, or a boxed gusset for a tailored look
  • Trims: fringing, tassels, pom poms, or braid sewn along the edge
  • Faces: embroidered cushion covers, appliqué, quilting, channel stitching or a pattern centred on the front
  • Fabrics: linen, cotton, velvet, bouclé style weaves, silk blends, prints from our library, or your own fabric if it is suitable

Scatter cushions in Dubai homes

Scatter cushions face the same conditions as everything else in a Dubai home. Cushions on a sofa by a big window fade in strong sun, so for bright spots we suggest fade resistant fabrics or simply swapping covers between rooms. Velvets and heavy weaves feel right in the cooler months, while linens and cottons feel lighter in summer, and a spare set of covers makes switching easy.

For homes with children and pets, choose removable covers in performance fabrics or washable cottons, and darker or patterned designs that hide marks. For care, see our care guide. For styling, a simple rule works: mix two or three sizes, one plain, one textured and one patterned, in a shared colour family. As a guide, a 3 seater takes four to five scatter cushions, and a large corner sofa six to eight. For outdoor scatter cushions, see outdoor cushions.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What size scatter cushions should I choose for my sofa?

For a standard sofa, 45 or 50 cm squares work well, with a lumbar cushion in front for layering. Deep sofas and corner units suit 55 or 60 cm. Mixing two sizes looks more relaxed than a row of identical cushions. We measure your sofa depth on the visit and recommend sizes.

Can you make cushion covers for my existing inserts?

Yes. Tell us the insert size, or bring one to the visit, and we make covers to fit. For a full look, the cover is usually made 2.5 to 5 cm smaller than the insert. If your inserts have flattened, we can supply new ones at the same time.

Feather or fibre cushion inserts: which is better?

Feather inserts feel heavier and softer and can be shaped and chopped, but need plumping. Fibre inserts are lighter, hold shape without plumping and suit people sensitive to feathers, though they flatten sooner. Microfibre offers a soft, feather like feel without feathers. We bring each to the visit so you can compare.

Can you make cushions to match my curtains?

Yes. If we are making your curtains or blinds, we can cut cushions from the same fabric and match the pattern. If your curtains came from elsewhere, bring a sample or the fabric details and we will source it or suggest a coordinating fabric.

Do you make embroidered cushion covers?

We make cushion covers in embroidered fabrics from our library, and can add decorative finishes such as appliqué, quilting, channel stitching, piping, fringing and tassels. Share reference images on the visit or in the Design Studio and we will advise what can be made and quote in writing.

Is there a minimum order for scatter cushions?

Send your design through the Design Studio or message us on WhatsApp with what you need, and we will confirm in writing. Many customers order a set for one sofa, and others order cushions as part of a larger curtain or upholstery job.

Tell us about your piece. We will take it from there.
