Which roller blind fabric do you need?

The fabric decides what the blind does. Before choosing a colour, decide whether the room needs darkness, glare control or simply privacy. The table compares the four main types we make.

What is openness factor?

Sunscreen roller blinds are woven with tiny gaps. The openness factor is the percentage of the fabric that is open. A 1% sunscreen blocks more light and gives more daytime privacy, while 5% lets in more light and shows more of the view. Like all screens, sunscreen gives privacy by day but not at night when the room is lit.

Blackout roller blinds in Dubai: avoiding the light gap

Blackout roller blinds in Dubai are our most requested blind, and the fabric is only part of the result. A roller blind fitted inside the window recess always leaves a small gap at each side, because the brackets and the roll need space. In a bedroom that gap shows as two bright lines on a summer morning.

We solve it in one of three ways. We can fit the blind outside the recess, so it overlaps the frame by several centimetres on each side. We can add side channels that the fabric runs inside, which gives the closest result to full darkness. Or we can pair an inside recess blind with a blackout curtain in front. A cassette at the top hides the roll and stops light over the tube.

Inside or outside the recess, chain or motorized

Inside recess fitting looks neat and leaves the sill free. Outside recess fitting blocks more light and suits shallow recesses or windows with handles that stick out. We measure for both on the visit and recommend the better option for each window.

Measuring is where most bought blinds go wrong. Recesses in Dubai buildings are rarely perfectly square, so we measure the width at the top, middle and bottom and work from the smallest, and check the depth for handles, sensors and window locks. That is also why we fit what we measure.

For control you can choose a chain with a tensioner fixed to the wall for child safety, a cordless spring system for small windows, or motorized roller blinds. Electric roller blinds run on a rechargeable battery motor or a mains motor and can be grouped by room, set to schedules, or linked to a smart home system. Roller blinds for Dubai sun, heat and dust

Strong sun through large glazing heats rooms quickly and fades floors and furniture. A sunscreen roller blind cuts glare and a share of the heat while keeping the view, which is why many Dubai apartments use sunscreen in living areas and blackout in bedrooms. Light coloured fabrics reflect more heat back through the glass. Darker sunscreens give a clearer view out.

Roller blinds are also easy to live with. Dust and sand wipe off most blind fabrics with a soft brush or damp cloth, and moisture resistant fabrics suit bathrooms and kitchens. A blind can sit behind curtains or sheer curtains to give you full control of light in every room.

A double roller is another option: two blinds on one bracket, usually a sunscreen at the back and a blackout at the front. You get glare control by day and darkness at night from a single neat fitting, which suits bedrooms that also work as studies.

Roller blinds price in Dubai

As market examples, public prices seen on a Dubai competitor site in November 2026 started from AED 180 for blackout roller blinds at 1 x 1.5 m, and from AED 950 for motorized blinds at 1 x 1.5 m. Vertical blinds started from AED 150 at the same size.
