Sheer curtains

Sheer curtains Dubai: soft daylight and privacy, made to measure

Sheer curtains filter Dubai's strong daylight into a soft, even glow and give you privacy from neighbouring towers during the day. The Fabric Room makes sheer curtains in Dubai to the exact drop and width of your windows, in voile, linen look and textured weaves, and fits them on a track that lets them hang straight and move freely.

White sheer curtains softening bright daylight
In shortSheer curtains are light, translucent curtains made from fine open weaves such as voile or linen, used to soften light and give daytime privacy. The Fabric Room makes sheer curtains in Dubai to measure, usually on a wave heading at 2 to 2.5 times the track width, often layered with blackout curtains or blinds for night.

What are sheer curtains, and what do they do?

Sheer curtains are made from fine, open weave fabric that lets light through but blurs the view. By day they cut glare, soften harsh shadows and stop people seeing in from outside, while you can still see out. At night the effect reverses: with lights on inside, a sheer no longer gives privacy, which is why most bedrooms pair a sheer with a blackout layer.

There are a few grades. A true sheer, such as fine voile, is almost transparent. A semi sheer, often in a linen or linen look weave, is denser and gives more privacy with a more textured look. Textured and embroidered sheers add pattern without blocking light. We bring all of these to your home, because the only way to judge a sheer is to hold it against your own window.

Which sheer for which room?

As a rule of thumb, a fine voile suits living rooms where the view and light matter most. A semi sheer linen look weave suits bedrooms and any room facing a neighbouring tower or a busy street. Textured sheers suit dining rooms and majlis spaces where the curtain is part of the decoration. If one room has several windows facing different ways, we can use one fabric throughout and adjust only the lining layer behind.

How we make sheer curtains in Dubai hang properly

Sheers are light, so small details show. For sheer curtains in Dubai we use three techniques to keep them looking calm and even, even with air conditioning moving the air.

First, the heading. A wave heading on a ceiling track is our most popular choice for sheers, because it gives soft, regular S shaped folds and glides easily. Pinch pleat and pleated sheer curtains suit more traditional rooms. We make both at 2 to 2.5 times the track width so the folds look full rather than stretched.

Second, the hem. We add a weighted hem so the sheer hangs straight and does not billow every time a door opens or the air conditioning starts.

Third, seams. Many sheer fabrics come in widths of 280 to 300 cm used sideways, so the fabric height covers your drop and we can make a wide curtain with no vertical joins. For windows taller than that, we plan seams to fall inside a fold where they cannot be seen.

Layering sheers with blackout curtains and blinds

Most Dubai bedrooms need both soft daylight and real darkness, so sheers rarely work alone. We plan three common layers:

  • A double track with the sheer at the back, near the glass, and a blackout curtain in front. Both can be drawn independently.
  • Sheer curtains with blackout blinds, where a blackout roller blind sits inside the window recess and the sheer hangs on a ceiling track in front.
  • A motorized double track so both layers open and close on a schedule or by remote, useful on tall or wide windows. See motorized curtains.

Sheer curtains for Dubai light, towers and tall windows

Dubai homes ask a lot of a sheer. Apartment towers often face each other at close range, so daytime privacy matters as much as light. Villa living rooms with double height glass need long drops and a strong ceiling track. Strong sun fades and weakens fabric over time, which is why we often recommend a high quality polyester or linen look sheer over pure linen for sunny rooms.

Colour is worth thinking about. White sheer curtains look crisp but can feel cool in north facing rooms. Ivory, oatmeal and soft grey sheers warm the light and hide dust and sand better. Darker sheers, such as grey sheer curtains, give more privacy and cut glare, but they also darken the room more. We show each option at your window on the visit. Our sheer curtain guide covers styling in more depth, and our guide to curtain types compares headings.

Ordering sheer curtains with The Fabric Room

Book a home visit and we bring the sheer library with us, measure every window and agree the track position and heading. You receive a written quote within 24 hours. Price depends on window size, fabric, heading, track and whether you add a second layer or a motor. Our pricing page explains how we quote.

With the 50% deposit paid, your installation day is set. The sheers are made to order in Dubai to your specification for fullness, hem weight and seam placement, and each panel is inspected and photographed before it leaves. Our team hangs them, steams out any creases and trains the folds so they fall evenly. To plan cushions or a headboard in a matching palette, try the The Fabric Room Design Studio, or book your home visit now.

Curtains and sheers are often ordered for a whole home at once, especially on handover of a new villa or apartment. We measure every room in one visit, keep fabrics consistent from room to room, and fit everything over as few days as possible. Interior designers can find our trade process on the designers page.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Do sheer curtains give privacy at night?

Not on their own. During the day, when it is brighter outside than in, a sheer stops people seeing in. At night, with the lights on inside, the effect reverses and people can see shapes through it. For night privacy, pair the sheer with a blackout curtain on a double track or a blind behind it.

What fullness do sheer curtains need?

For wave and pinch pleat headings we make sheers at 2 to 2.5 times the track width. Less fullness makes a sheer look thin and stretched when closed, because there is so little fabric weight. Eyelet sheers can work at 1.5 to 2 times, though they suit fewer rooms.

Are linen sheer curtains a good idea in Dubai?

Natural linen sheers drape beautifully, but long exposure to strong sun weakens and yellows natural fibres. In a very sunny room we usually recommend a linen look polyester, which gives the same texture with better sun resistance. In shaded rooms, real linen is a lovely choice.

Can sheer curtains be washed?

Most polyester voile and linen look sheers can be washed on a gentle cycle and hung back damp to drop out creases. Natural linen and embroidered sheers often need dry cleaning. We give you the care instructions for your exact fabric with the finished curtains.

Can you add sheers to my existing curtains?

Usually, yes. If your current track is single, we can replace it with a double track, or fit a separate ceiling track for the sheer behind the existing curtains. We check the ceiling and fixing on the visit and quote for the track and sheers together.

How do you stop sheers blowing in the air conditioning?

We add a weighted hem, which keeps the bottom of the sheer steady and helps it hang in straight folds. A wave heading on a good ceiling track also helps, because the fabric is held at even spacing along its full width.

Tell us about your piece. We will take it from there.
