Roman blinds come in a few distinct styles. Each uses the same principle, fabric drawn up by cords through rings on the back, but they fold and hang differently.

Custom roman blinds for awkward windows

Bay windows get one blind per facet, aligned so the folds line up across all of them. Very wide windows are split into two or three blinds on one headrail so they stay light enough to lift. Tall windows have extra rods so the folds stay even from top to bottom.

Roman blind fabric and lining choices

Almost any furnishing fabric can become a roman blind, which is the main reason people choose them over roller blinds. Plains, textures, prints, stripes and patterned roman blinds all work, as long as the weight suits folding. Medium weight cottons, linens and blends fold crisply. Very heavy velvets need fewer, deeper folds, and very light fabrics need interlining to give body.

Linen roman blinds are popular in Dubai homes for their relaxed texture. They look best with a lining that protects the linen from direct sun, which otherwise fades and weakens natural fibres. There are three lining options: a standard lining that protects the fabric and gives a clean back from outside, a blackout lining for bedrooms, and a thermal interlining that adds body and insulation for sun facing rooms.

Blackout roman blinds for Dubai bedrooms

Blackout roman blinds combine the look of fabric with a coated blackout lining sewn behind it. They block light through the fabric well. As with any blind, some light can pass at the sides. Fitting outside the recess, so the blind overlaps the frame on each side, gives the darkest result, and pairing it with blackout curtains closes the gaps completely.

For a sense of the market, a Dubai competitor site listed blackout roman blinds from AED 375 for a 1 x 1.5 m window in November 2026, with motorized blinds from AED 950 at that size. These are other retailers' public starting points, not our prices. Your own price depends on size, fabric, lining, fold style, control and the number of windows. For a nursery or a bedroom used by shift workers, we often combine a blackout roman blind inside the recess with a curtain on a ceiling track in front. The blind does the work, and the curtain covers the side gaps and softens the room.

Corded, cordless and motorized roman blinds

Traditional roman blinds use a cord pulled to the side and tied off on a cleat. We fit child safety devices on every corded blind, including breakaway cord joins and cleats placed out of reach. For children's rooms and nurseries we recommend cordless roman blinds, raised by hand from the bottom bar, or a chain operated headrail with a tensioner fixed to the wall.

Motorized roman blinds raise and lower at the touch of a button, on a schedule or through a smart home system. One practical point: because a roman blind folds up rather than rolling away, the raised folds sit at the top of the window. We usually fit it above the frame so that stack does not cover the glass.

Roman blinds or roller blinds?

Choose roman blinds when you want fabric, colour and pattern at the window, a softer look in bedrooms and living rooms, or a blind that coordinates with cushions and upholstery. Choose roller blinds for a slimmer profile, sunscreen fabrics that keep the view, wet areas and the lowest cost per window. Many homes use both: roman blinds in the bedrooms and sunscreen rollers in the living areas.
