Bench cushions

Bench cushions Dubai: dining benches, banquettes and hallway seats

A bench is shared seating, so its cushion has to be firm along the whole length, stay put and stand up to food, shoes and children. The Fabric Room makes bench cushions in Dubai to measure for dining benches, kitchen banquettes, hallway benches and outdoor seating. We match the thickness to your table height and the fabric to how the bench is used.

In shortBench cushions are long seat cushions made to the exact length and depth of a bench, usually in firm high density foam with a removable cover. The Fabric Room makes custom bench cushions in Dubai for dining benches, banquettes, hallways and gardens, sized so the seat height still works with your table, after a home visit and written quote.

Which benches do we make cushions for?

We make custom bench cushions for almost any bench, built in or freestanding. A freestanding bench is measured edge to edge, and we decide whether the cushion should sit flush or overhang slightly at the front. A built in bench is measured wall to wall at the back and the front, because alcoves are rarely square. The most common jobs in Dubai homes are:

  • Dining bench cushions for one side of a dining table
  • Kitchen banquettes and breakfast nooks, seat and back
  • Hallway and entrance benches where people sit to take off shoes
  • Bed end benches and dressing room seats
  • Children's playroom benches and built in storage benches
  • Cane, rattan and timber benches indoors or on a covered terrace
  • Garden and poolside benches, using outdoor fabrics and quick dry foam

Dining bench cushion: getting the height right

The most overlooked detail on a dining bench cushion is height. Dining tables usually stand 72 to 76 cm high, and a comfortable seat sits roughly 28 to 32 cm below the tabletop, which puts the sitting height at around 44 to 48 cm. If the bench itself is already at chair height, a thick cushion lifts everyone too close to the table. So we measure the table and the bench and choose the cushion thickness to land at the right height.

Edge style changes both look and comfort. The table shows the four we make most often.

Foam bench cushion construction

A bench cushion is sat on unevenly. People perch at the edge, slide along, and two adults may sit at one end while a child kneels at the other. A soft foam dips where weight lands and stays dipped. So for a foam bench cushion we use firm high density seat foam, commonly 35 to 40 kg per cubic metre, with a light fibre wrap so the top is not hard. A thin seat pad on a hard bench needs the firmest grade of all, so you never feel the board through it.

Long benches raise a choice: one piece or sections. A single cushion looks cleaner and suits buttoning, which also stops the cover shifting on the foam. Sections, typically one per seat, are easier to remove, clean and turn, and suit banquettes that wrap a corner. Every cover has a concealed zip, and we add a non slip base or ties so the cushion does not slide forward on a smooth timber or stone seat.

Banquette seating cushions

Kitchen banquettes and breakfast nooks need a seat cushion and a back. For the back, you can choose loose back cushions that lean against the wall, a firm fixed back panel, or channelled upholstered panels fixed to the wall for a restaurant look. Loose backs are the simplest and easiest to clean. Fixed and channelled panels are an upholstery job, which we quote through our upholstery service.

Loose back cushions are sized to the seat depth. A deep banquette needs a thicker back so diners sit upright at the table rather than leaning away from it. We usually suggest backs of similar height to a dining chair back, and we confirm the depth by having you sit on a sample on the visit.

Corner banquettes are templated on site so the two runs meet cleanly at the corner, with piping lines matching. If the banquette has storage under hinged lids, we split the seat cushions to suit, as we do for window seat cushions.

Fabrics for dining and outdoor bench cushions

Dining benches meet spills, so the fabric matters more than on almost any other cushion. We recommend a performance weave with a stain resistant finish and a Martindale rating of 25,000 or more for heavy domestic use, or leather and faux leather that wipe clean. Darker or patterned fabrics hide marks better. See our fabric guide.

Outdoor benches need different materials. Solution dyed acrylic or olefin fabrics resist UV fading in Dubai sun, and reticulated quick dry foam lets water drain through after rain, cleaning or a splash from the pool. For waterproof outdoor bench cushions in exposed spots, we can add a water resistant liner. Our outdoor cushions page and outdoor cushion guide cover outdoor fabrics in full.

How ordering bench cushions in Dubai works

We visit, measure the bench and table, template any angles or notches, and bring fabric and foam samples to try. You receive a written quote within 24 hours. Price depends on length, depth, thickness, edge style, sections and fabric, and our pricing page explains how we quote.

Paying the 50% deposit locks in your delivery date. Made to order in Dubai to the agreed thickness and foam grade, each bench cushion is inspected and photographed before it leaves. When our team fits the set, we sit at the table with you to confirm the height is right. For back cushions or matching seat pads, use the The Fabric Room Design Studio, see our cushion size guide, or book your home visit.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How thick should a dining bench cushion be?

It depends on the bench height. Aim for a sitting height of roughly 44 to 48 cm, about 28 to 32 cm below a standard dining table. If the bench is already at chair height, a 3 to 5 cm seat pad is enough. A lower bench can take a 7 to 8 cm box cushion. We measure both on the visit.

Should a long bench cushion be one piece or sections?

One piece looks cleaner and suits buttoning. Sections, usually one per seat, are easier to remove, clean and rotate, and work better on corner banquettes. Both use the same foam. We recommend the better option for your bench after seeing how it is used.

What foam is best for a bench cushion?

Firm high density seat foam, commonly 35 to 40 kg per cubic metre, because people sit unevenly along a bench and softer foam dips. A light fibre wrap softens the top. Outdoor bench cushions use reticulated quick dry foam that drains water.

How do you stop bench cushions sliding?

We add a non slip base fabric, ties around legs or a frame, or hook and loop strips fixed to the bench. A cushion cut tightly between walls or arms also moves less. We choose the method that suits your bench surface.

Can you make waterproof outdoor bench cushions?

We make outdoor bench cushions in solution dyed acrylic or olefin fabrics, which resist UV fading and dry quickly, over reticulated quick dry foam that drains water. For very exposed spots we can add a water resistant liner. Cushions should still be stored or covered in heavy rain and sandstorms.

What fabric is best for a family dining bench?

A performance fabric with a stain resistant finish and a Martindale rating of 25,000 or more, or a good faux leather that wipes clean. Darker colours and patterns hide everyday marks. Choose zipped, removable covers so they can be cleaned properly.
