Sheer curtains: a practical guide for Dubai homes

Sheer curtains soften strong Dubai daylight, cut glare and give privacy by day without closing the room off. They are the first layer in most villa and apartment window schemes. This guide covers the main sheer fabrics, how much fullness they need, what they can and cannot do for privacy, and how to pair them with blackout.

Quick answerSheer curtains are light, translucent curtains, usually voile, linen or a linen look weave, that filter daylight and give privacy during the day while keeping the view. They do not give privacy at night when lights are on inside, so in bedrooms and street facing rooms they are layered with a blackout curtain or blind on a double track.

What are sheer curtains?

Sheer curtains are made from lightweight, loosely woven or very fine fabrics that let light through. You can see shapes and light through them, but not detail. They are usually unlined and hung with generous fullness so they fall in soft folds.

In Dubai, sheers do a job that is more practical than decorative. Direct sun through large windows creates hard glare on screens and floors, heats surfaces and fades fabrics. A sheer diffuses that light so the room stays bright and the view stays open, but the glare and some of the heat are cut. Our sheer curtains service page shows the range we make.

Sheers are different from the old style net curtains that were hung flat inside a window frame. A modern sheer is a full length curtain in its own right, made to measure with a proper heading, weighted hem and generous fullness. It hangs from a ceiling track like any other curtain and draws open to clear the glass completely.

Voile, linen sheers and other sheer fabrics compared

Sheer fabrics vary in weight, texture and how they age in strong sun. The table compares the types we use most often for sheer curtains in Dubai homes.

Which sheer fabric lasts best in Dubai sun?

Polyester and linen look polyester sheers hold their colour and strength best in strong sun. Natural linen softens and can fade or weaken over years on a west facing window. Silk sheers are beautiful but break down in direct UV and are not a good choice for sun facing glass.

How much fullness do sheer curtains need?

Because sheers are so light, they need more fabric than lined curtains to look full rather than thin. We usually make sheer curtains at 2.5 to 3 times the track width. Below about 2 times, a sheer looks flat and stretched when closed, and the light through it looks uneven.

Many sheer fabrics come in wide widths, often 280 to 300 cm, which can be turned sideways so the fabric width becomes the drop. This avoids vertical seams, which show clearly in a translucent fabric. On drops taller than the fabric width, such as double height windows, seams are needed and should be placed so they fall into the folds. A weighted hem, often a fine lead chain, helps a sheer hang straight in air conditioned rooms where vents move the air. See the curtain measuring guide for how to calculate it.

Do sheer curtains give privacy at night?

Sheer curtains give privacy when it is brighter outside than inside. During the day, someone outside looking in sees the bright face of the sheer, not the room behind it. At night, with lights on inside, the effect reverses and people outside can see shapes and movement clearly.

This matters for ground floor villa rooms that face the street, bedrooms that look onto neighbouring towers and any room used in the evening. For those rooms, a sheer on its own is not enough. Add a second layer that closes at night: a lined or blackout curtain, a roller blind or a roman blind. Denser sheers and textured linens give a little more privacy than fine voile, but none give full privacy after dark.

If you want privacy at night but still want light, a dim out curtain or a light filtering roller blind behind the sheer is a good middle ground. Both block the view in while letting some light through, so the room does not feel shut in during the evening. For a bedroom where you also want darkness for sleep, choose a full blackout layer instead.

How do you layer sheer curtains with blackout?

Layering is the most common way sheers are used in Dubai bedrooms and living rooms. It gives you three settings: open, sheer only for daytime privacy and soft light, and fully closed for night and sleep.

Double track with sheer and blackout curtains

A double ceiling track holds the sheer on the window side and the blackout curtain on the room side. Each layer draws independently. This is the classic hotel set up and gives the softest look, with full length fabric on both layers. Allow about 12 to 15 cm of depth for a double track if it sits in a curtain box.

Sheer curtains with blackout blinds

A blackout roller blind fitted inside the recess or at the glass, with a sheer curtain on a ceiling track in front, is cleaner and uses less space. The blind does the darkening and the sheer softens the window. This works well where the recess is deep or the wall space beside the window is limited.

Motorized layers

Both layers can be motorized and controlled separately, with timers that close the blackout layer at night and open the sheer in the morning. On tall windows this is often the only practical way to use two layers daily. See our motorized curtains page and the blackout curtains guide.

Which heading works best for sheer curtains?

Wave is the most popular heading for sheers in modern Dubai homes. The even folds suit translucent fabric, because light passes through the curtain in regular bands, and wave tracks run quietly whether opened by hand or by motor. Pinch pleat sheers look more formal and suit traditional rooms or a majlis. Pencil pleat and rod pocket headings suit sheers that are rarely drawn.

The heading should match the curtain in front. If the blackout layer is wave, a wave sheer behind it keeps both layers stacking neatly. Compare all the options in our types of curtains guide.

White sheer curtains, colour and living room ideas

White and off white sheers are the most requested because they keep a room bright and work with any scheme. Pure white can look cold and blue in strong north light and slightly stark against warm stone floors. Ivory, chalk and oatmeal tones often sit better in Dubai interiors with marble, travertine or wood.

Coloured and darker sheers change the light in the room. A grey or taupe sheer cuts glare more strongly and gives a softer, cooler light. Black sheers look graphic and reduce glare further, but they show dust. In living rooms, a textured linen sheer behind lined dress curtains in a sofa toned colour is a reliable scheme. For more on proportion and colour, read the living room curtain design guide.

Caring for sheer curtains in Dubai dust and humidity

Sheers collect fine dust and sand, especially on windows that open onto balconies and gardens. Shake or vacuum them gently with a soft brush every few weeks. Polyester voile and linen look sheers can usually be washed on a gentle cool cycle and rehung slightly damp so they drop straight. Natural linen sheers are best dry cleaned, because they can shrink. Always check the care label, and never tumble dry a sheer, because heat sets creases that are hard to remove.

In humid coastal months, condensation on cold glass behind a sheer can mark the fabric. Leave a small gap between the sheer and the glass, and open sheers during the day where you can so air moves behind them. Our care guide covers cleaning for all soft furnishings.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What are sheer curtains used for?

Sheer curtains filter daylight, cut glare and give privacy during the day while keeping the view and the room bright. In Dubai they also protect floors and upholstery from some direct sun. They are often the window layer in a double track, with a blackout or lined curtain in front that closes at night.

Can people see through sheer curtains at night?

Yes. When the lights are on inside and it is dark outside, people can see shapes and movement through a sheer. Sheers give privacy only when it is brighter outside than inside. For bedrooms and street facing rooms, pair them with a lined curtain, a blackout curtain or a blind that you close in the evening.

What is the difference between voile and sheer?

Sheer describes any translucent curtain. Voile is one type of sheer fabric: a fine, smooth, lightweight weave, usually polyester, that is very soft and easy to wash. Other sheers include linen and linen look weaves, open leno weaves and embroidered sheers. Each filters light differently and has a different texture.

How full should sheer curtains be?

Make sheer curtains at 2.5 to 3 times the track width. Lighter fabrics need more fullness than lined curtains to look soft and even. Below about 2 times, a sheer looks thin and flat when closed. Wide width sheers can be turned sideways to avoid vertical seams on standard drops.

Should sheer curtains touch the floor?

For most rooms, finish sheers about 1 cm above the floor so they hang straight and stay clean. A small break of 2 to 5 cm gives a softer look in a living room. Avoid a puddle on sheers that are drawn daily, because the hem collects dust and sand and the fabric marks easily.

Do sheer curtains keep heat out?

They help a little. A sheer diffuses direct sunlight and reduces glare, which takes some heat off surfaces near the window. It does not stop heat the way a lined or blackout curtain does. On west and south facing glass, close a lined layer during the hottest part of the day.

Can I have sheer curtains with blackout blinds?

Yes, and it is a clean, space saving combination. Fit a blackout roller blind inside the recess or close to the glass, with a sheer curtain on a ceiling track in front. The blind darkens the room at night and the sheer softens the window by day. Both can be motorized and controlled separately.
