Blackout curtains Dubai guide: linings, light gaps and heat

This blackout curtains Dubai guide starts with the two jobs they do: keeping a bedroom dark from a sunrise that comes before 6am in summer, and cutting the heat that pours through sun facing glass. The lining does most of that work, but the fitting matters just as much. A blackout fabric with gaps at the top and sides will still let a room glow.

Quick answerBlackout curtains use a coated lining, usually a three pass foam layer, that stops light passing through the fabric. To get a dark room you also need to close the light gaps: a ceiling track or pelmet at the top, a track that extends 15 to 30 cm past each side of the window, an overlap where the curtains meet, and a hem that finishes about 1 cm above the floor.

What makes blackout curtains block light?

Blackout curtains block light with a lining, not with the face fabric. The standard is a woven lining with an acrylic foam coating applied in layers. A three pass lining has a dark layer sandwiched between two light layers, so no light passes through and the side facing the window stays light in colour. The face fabric can then be almost anything: linen, velvet, a plain weave or a print.

Some fabrics are sold as blackout with the coating built into the back of the fabric itself. These are convenient and lighter, but the coating can crack along folds over time, and they tend to hang stiffer. A separate blackout lining sewn behind a face fabric gives a better drape and protects the face fabric from the sun. Our blackout curtains service page shows the linings we use.

Blackout vs dim out vs thermal lining: what is the difference?

These terms are often mixed up in shops and online listings. They describe different linings with different results, and the right choice depends on the room.

Can you combine linings?

Yes. A blackout lining with an interlining between it and the face fabric gives the darkest room and the fullest drape. It is heavier, so the track, brackets and fixings need to be rated for the weight, especially on wide windows.

Where does light leak around blackout curtains?

Light leaks are the most common complaint about blackout curtains, and they are almost always a fitting problem rather than a fabric problem. Light comes in at four places: the top, the sides, the middle and the bottom.

  • Top: a wall track or pole leaves a gap above the heading. A ceiling track, a curtain box or a pelmet closes it.
  • Sides: if the track stops at the window frame, light spills around the edges. Extend the track 15 to 30 cm past each side, and ask for returns, where the curtain wraps back to the wall at each end.
  • Middle: two curtains that only meet edge to edge leave a line of light. Overlap arms on the track let the leading edges cross by about 5 to 10 cm.
  • Bottom: a curtain that stops well short of the floor lets light bounce off the tiles. Finish about 1 cm above the floor.

Recessed windows and blackout

A curtain hung outside a deep recess can still let light in from the sides of the recess. The answer is to extend the track wider, or to fit a blackout roller blind inside the recess and a curtain in front. This layered set up is what most hotels use.

Do blackout curtains reduce heat in Dubai?

Yes, when they are closed. Most heat gain through a Dubai window is direct sun on the glass, which then warms the room and the air conditioning has to work against it. A lined curtain closed across sun facing glass stops much of that sunlight reaching the room, and the light coloured back of a three pass blackout lining reflects some of it back towards the window.

The effect is strongest on west and south facing windows, where the afternoon sun is most intense, and on large sliding doors and floor to ceiling glazing. For best results, close the curtains before the sun hits the glass, use a ceiling track so warm air is not drawn over the top of the curtain, and choose a light coloured lining face towards the window. Blackout lining also protects face fabrics, rugs and upholstery from UV fading, which matters for velvet and natural fibres.

Blackout curtains for bedrooms and nurseries

In summer the sun in Dubai rises before 6am, and many bedrooms face east or have large balcony doors. A blackout bedroom needs the lining and the fitting working together. Our standard specification for a bedroom is a ceiling track, pinch pleat or wave heading, three pass blackout lining, overlap arms in the centre and a floor clearing finish.

For the darkest result, add a second layer. A sheer on the window side of a double track gives privacy by day, with the blackout curtain in front for night. Or fit a blackout roller blind behind the curtain. The blind blocks light at the glass and the curtain closes the gaps around it. As a market example, one Dubai competitor listed blackout roller blinds from AED 180 for a 1 x 1.5 m window and pinch pleat blackout curtains from AED 500 for a 2.5 x 3 m window in November 2026.

Blackout curtains for nurseries and children's rooms

A dark room helps babies and young children nap during the day and sleep past dawn. The same light gap rules apply, and a few safety points matter more here.

Avoid loose cords and chains within reach of a cot or bed. Motorized curtains and blinds remove cords completely and can be set on a timer. If you use a corded blind, fit a cleat or tensioner high on the wall. Choose a washable or removable face fabric, because nursery curtains get handled. Keep the hem clear of the floor so small children cannot pull on it. Our motorized curtains page explains the options.

Blackout for sliding glass doors and large windows

Many Dubai villas and apartments have full height sliding doors onto balconies and gardens. These are the hardest openings to black out, because the glass is wide and the doors are used daily. A ceiling track with wave curtains stacks back tightly so the door opening stays clear. A split pair that opens from the centre, with overlap arms, gives the best seal when closed.

On very wide or tall openings, the weight of a blackout curtain becomes a factor. A motorized track makes daily use easier and reduces wear on the leading edges. Measure carefully, including the drop at both ends, using our curtain measuring guide.

How do hotels get blackout so right?

Hotel room curtains are the benchmark most people have in mind when they ask for blackout. The method is simple and repeatable. Hotels use a ceiling track or a deep curtain box, so there is no gap at the top. They run a sheer on the window side and a blackout curtain on the room side of a double track. The track extends well past the window, the curtains overlap in the centre and the hems stop just above the floor.

The fabrics are chosen to be practical as well as dark: heavy enough to hang straight, durable enough for daily use and easy to clean. You can have exactly the same set up at home. In a Dubai villa or apartment with a built in curtain pocket, it is usually a straightforward fit.

What should a blackout curtain specification include?

Before anything is made, every detail should be agreed in writing. This protects you and makes sure the finished curtain does what you expect. Our written specifications for blackout curtains cover these points:

  • Track type and position, ceiling or wall, single or double, manual or motorized
  • Track width including stack back on each side
  • Heading and fullness, for example wave at 2.5 times
  • Face fabric, colour and pattern repeat
  • Lining type: three pass blackout, with or without interlining
  • Overlap at the centre and returns at each end
  • Finished drop and finish, for example 1 cm above the floor
  • Hem weights and any trims

Blackout curtains Dubai: what drives the cost?

The price of made to measure blackout curtains depends on the track width, the drop, the fullness of the heading, the face fabric, the lining specification and the track or motor. A wide villa window with interlining and a motorized track costs considerably more than a single bedroom window with a hook track. We explain how we price on our pricing page and in the curtain cost guide.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Do blackout curtains block 100% of light?

A good three pass blackout lining stops light passing through the fabric itself. Whether the room is fully dark depends on the fitting. Light enters around the top, sides, middle and bottom of the curtain. A ceiling track, a track extended past the window, overlap arms in the centre and a floor clearing hem close those gaps.

What is the difference between blackout and dim out curtains?

Blackout lining is coated so that light does not pass through the fabric. Dim out lining cuts most of the light but lets a soft glow through, so the room is darker but not dark. Dim out is softer and lighter and suits living rooms. Blackout is the right choice for bedrooms, nurseries and media rooms.

Do blackout curtains keep a room cooler in Dubai?

Yes, when they are closed before the sun reaches the glass. Most heat gain through a window is direct sunlight. A lined curtain stops much of it reaching the room, and a light coloured lining facing the window reflects some back. The effect is largest on west and south facing windows and large sliding doors.

Can I add blackout lining to my existing curtains?

Often, yes. A blackout lining can be sewn in behind existing curtains, or made as a separate detachable lining on its own hooks. It depends on the heading and the condition of the face fabric. The curtain will be heavier, so the track should be checked too. We can assess this on a home visit.

What colour should blackout curtains be?

The face fabric can be any colour, because the lining does the work. White blackout curtains block light just as well as dark ones when they are properly lined. Choose the face colour for the room. Keep the lining side that faces the window light in colour, which helps reflect heat and looks neat from outside.

Are blackout curtains or blackout blinds better?

Each has strengths. A blackout roller blind fitted inside a recess blocks light at the glass. A blackout curtain on a ceiling track covers the whole wall and closes the gaps around the window. For the darkest room, use both: the blind behind for darkness and the curtain in front to seal the edges and soften the room.

How do I clean blackout curtains in Dubai's dust?

Vacuum them regularly with a soft brush attachment, working from the top down, and shake them out gently when you can. Dry cleaning suits most lined curtains. Avoid washing a coated blackout lining at high temperature, because heat and tumble drying can crack the coating. See our care guide for more detail.
