Why proportion matters most in living room curtain design
Curtains are the largest area of fabric in most living rooms. Their height and width change how big the window and the whole room look. The most common mistake is hanging the track just above the window frame and stopping it at the frame edge. The curtains then cover part of the glass when open, the window looks smaller and the ceiling looks lower.
The fix is to go high and wide. Hang the curtains from the ceiling, or within a few centimetres of it, so the eye reads one tall line from ceiling to floor. Extend the track 15 to 30 cm past each side of the window so the curtains stack back onto the wall and the full glass is clear. On a wide villa window, this alone makes the room feel bigger and brighter.
Check the wall either side before you fix the width. Sockets, light switches, air conditioning units and corners often limit how far the track can extend. Where one side is short, a curtain can draw to one side only, or the track can be split so each curtain stacks where there is space.
- Height: ceiling track, or wall track fixed close to the ceiling
- Width: track 15 to 30 cm wider than the window on each side
- Length: finish about 1 cm above the floor, or a 2 to 5 cm break for a softer look
- Fullness: 2 to 2.5 times the track width for pinch pleat and wave
How does ceiling height change your curtain design?
Dubai apartments commonly have ceilings around 2.6 to 3 metres, while many villas are taller and some living rooms are double height. The approach changes with the height.
In lower rooms, avoid heavy pelmets and swags, which cut into the wall height and make the ceiling feel closer. A slim ceiling track or a recessed curtain pocket keeps the line clean. In taller rooms, a curtain box or upholstered pelmet can finish the top neatly and hide the track, and a lit pelmet adds soft evening light along the window wall.
Whatever the height, keep every window in the room at the same track level and finish length, even when the windows themselves vary. A consistent line across the room looks deliberate and calm.
| Ceiling height | Recommended approach | Heading |
|---|---|---|
| Under 2.7 m | Ceiling track, curtains tone with the wall, no pelmet | Wave or double pinch pleat |
| 2.7 to 3.5 m | Ceiling track or curtain box, full length lined curtains with sheers behind | Pinch pleat or wave |
| 3.5 to 5 m | Ceiling track, interlined or weighted curtains, consider motorized | Wave or triple pinch pleat |
| Double height, 5 m and above | Motorized ceiling track, seams hidden in folds, heavy hem weights | Wave |
Which curtain colour goes with your sofa?
There are three reliable ways to choose a curtain colour for a living room, and each gives a different result.
Tone with the walls when you want the room to feel calm, larger and taller. Curtains a shade or two darker or lighter than the wall blend into the architecture and let the sofa, art and rugs lead. This works especially well in apartments and in rooms with lower ceilings.
Pick up a colour from the sofa, rug or cushions when you want the scheme to feel joined up. Take the colour from a secondary element rather than the main sofa fabric itself, so the curtains relate to the room without matching it exactly. A cream sofa with patterned cushions, for example, can take a curtain in one of the cushion tones.
Contrast with the walls when you want the window to be a feature. Deep colours such as teal, navy, ochre or forest green against pale walls frame the view strongly. Line them well, because saturated colours fade fastest in Dubai sun. You can try fabrics and colours together in the The Fabric Room Design Studio, or see our scatter cushions and sofa upholstery to plan the whole room.

Are linen curtains a good choice for living rooms?
Linen curtains are one of the most requested choices for living rooms because of their natural texture, soft drape and relaxed look. They suit modern, coastal and neutral interiors and work well as both dress curtains and sheers.
Linen does have characteristics to plan for. It creases, which most people accept as part of the look. It can shrink slightly if washed, so pure linen curtains are best dry cleaned. It is a natural fibre, so it fades and weakens in strong sun over time. On sun facing windows in Dubai, line linen curtains to protect them, and consider a linen blend or a linen look polyester where the curtains take a lot of direct light. Read more in our fabric guide.
Linen looks best with a wave or double pinch pleat heading, at 2 to 2.5 times fullness, finished just above the floor or with a small break.

Curtain design for double height living rooms
Double height living rooms are common in Dubai villas and need a different approach. The drop can be 5 to 7 metres, so the curtains are heavy and the track carries a lot of weight. A ceiling track rated for the load, fixed into a sound structure, is essential.
At this height, manual curtains are impractical, so a motorized track is the normal choice, often with a sheer and a lined layer on separate motors. Wave headings run best on long motorized tracks. Fabric widths cannot be turned sideways at these drops, so vertical seams are needed and must be pattern matched and placed inside the folds. Weighted hems keep the curtains hanging straight in strong air conditioning airflow.
Keep the design simple. Plain or subtly textured fabrics usually look better at this scale than large patterns, which can overwhelm the room. Our curtain measuring guide explains why tall windows should be measured with a laser and surveyed professionally.
Curtain design for a majlis
A majlis is a room for receiving guests, so curtains there are usually more formal and more generous than in a family living room. Privacy matters, especially in ground floor majlis rooms that face the street or garden, so a sheer and a lined curtain on a double track is the usual set up.
Pinch pleat and triple pinch pleat headings suit the formal character, often with a pelmet or a curtain box to finish the top. Symmetry is important: matched pairs on every window, with the same finish length and the same stack back. Many clients coordinate the curtains with majlis seating and floor cushions, using the same fabric family or a trim that links them. Our majlis design guide covers the seating side in detail.
What makes curtains feel luxury in Dubai?
When people search for luxury curtains in Dubai, they are usually describing finish rather than price. The difference between ordinary and high end curtains shows in the details you can see and feel.
- Generous fullness of 2.5 times on pinch pleat and wave, so the folds stay deep when closed
- Interlining between face fabric and lining for a fuller, heavier drape
- Pattern matched across every width and between pairs
- Hand finished hems and weighted corners so the curtains hang straight
- A leading edge trim or contrast border, applied straight and even
- Ceiling tracks and curtain boxes that hide the mechanism
- Accurate drop to every point of the floor, not an average
Adding sheers to a living room scheme
Most living room curtain designs in Dubai combine a sheer behind a lined curtain. The sheer softens daylight and gives daytime privacy, and the lined curtain adds colour and closes the room at night. Our sheer curtains guide covers fabrics and layering.
