Care guide

How to care for upholstery and curtains in a Dubai home

Good care adds years to a sofa or a pair of curtains. Knowing how to care for upholstery and curtains matters more in Dubai than most places, because strong sun, fine dust, humid summers and constant air conditioning all work on fabric. This guide gives simple owner care routines for sofas, chairs, headboards, cushions and curtains.

Quick answerTo care for upholstery and curtains, vacuum them weekly with a soft brush attachment, rotate and turn loose cushions every week or two, and keep fabrics out of strong direct sun with sheers, blinds or linings. Blot spills at once rather than rubbing, test any cleaner on a hidden area first and have upholstery and lined curtains professionally cleaned when they need it, roughly every 12 to 24 months.

How to care for upholstery and curtains in the Dubai climate

Four things shorten the life of fabric in Dubai homes. Strong sunlight fades colour and weakens fibres, especially in rooms with large glazed windows. Fine dust and sand settle into weaves and act like sandpaper every time you sit. Humid summers near the coast encourage mildew if a home is closed up. Air conditioning dries leather and some natural fibres.

None of these need complicated care. A few minutes a week and some sensible habits make a real difference to how long upholstery and curtains last.

Upholstery care: a simple weekly routine

Dust is the main enemy of sofa fabric in Dubai. Vacuum upholstery once a week with a soft upholstery brush, working along the weave, and use the crevice tool along seams and under seat cushions where sand collects. Use low suction on delicate fabrics such as silk, loose weaves and velvets.

Rotate and turn reversible seat and back cushions every week or two so they wear and compress evenly. Plump feather filled cushions daily, pushing the feather back into the corners. Sit in different places on the sofa where you can; the favourite seat always wears first.

Sofa fabric care: dealing with spills and stains

Act quickly. Blot a spill with a clean, white, absorbent cloth, pressing rather than rubbing. Rubbing spreads the stain and can damage the pile of velvet or chenille. Work from the outside of the mark inward.

Before using any product, check the cleaning code on the fabric label or your fabric details. Common codes are W (water based cleaners), S (solvent cleaners only), WS (either) and X (vacuum only, professional cleaning). Always test on a hidden area first, such as the back of a skirt or under a cushion. Never soak upholstery, as water can spread through the foam and leave rings when it dries.

Can I wash cushion covers?

Only if the fabric is washable and the covers have been made to be removed. Zips on cushions are often for fitting rather than washing. Washing one cover can make it a different shade from the rest of the sofa, so if you wash, wash all covers together. Check our fabric guide or ask us about your fabric.

How to protect fabric from sun and AC

UV light fades colour and weakens fibres over time, and natural fibres such as silk, linen and cotton are most affected. Draw sheers or blinds during the brightest hours, or arrange furniture out of direct sun where possible. Lined curtains protect both the curtain face fabric and the furniture behind them. See sheer curtains and roller blinds.

Air conditioning dries the air, which can dry and crack leather. Dust leather weekly, wipe it with a slightly damp cloth and condition it with a product made for upholstery leather every few months. Avoid placing sofas directly under AC vents or against heaters, which also draws dust onto the fabric.

Curtain care: dust, sun and washing

Curtains collect more dust than any other soft furnishing because they hang by windows and doors. Vacuum them every week or two with a soft brush on low suction, working from top to bottom, and pay attention to the heading and the hem. Gently shaking sheers also helps.

Lined, interlined and pinch pleat curtains should not be machine washed at home. The face fabric, lining and interlining can shrink at different rates, and pleats lose their shape. Have them professionally dry cleaned. Unlined sheers may be washable if the care label allows it: wash cool and gentle, and hang them back while slightly damp so they drop straight.

Sand, dust storms and closed up homes

During dust storms, close windows and doors and run air conditioning on recirculate if you can. Afterwards, vacuum upholstery and curtains before anyone sits or opens them, so the fine dust is lifted rather than ground in. Wipe window sills and track channels, where sand builds up and can wear curtain gliders.

If you travel in summer, avoid sealing a home up completely without cooling. In coastal communities, hot and humid air with no circulation can lead to mildew on fabric and leather. Many owners keep the AC running at a moderate setting while away. Cover upholstery with breathable cotton dust sheets rather than plastic, which traps moisture.

Caring for headboards, cushions and ottomans

Headboards collect hair oils and skin products where heads rest. Vacuum them with a soft brush every week or two and spot clean marks early, following the cleaning code. Channelled and buttoned headboards gather dust in the stitch lines, so use the brush along each channel.

Scatter cushions need daily plumping if feather filled, and occasional airing in shade on a dry day. Box cushions on benches and window seats should be turned regularly, as the front edge takes most weight. Ottomans used as coffee tables benefit from a tray, which protects the top from cups and keeps the foam from denting in one spot.

Outdoor cushions need their own routine, covered in our outdoor cushions guide.

Leather sofa care

Dust leather weekly with a soft dry cloth. Wipe spills straight away with a clean damp cloth, never with household cleaners or wipes, which strip the finish. Condition every three to six months, more often in rooms with constant AC or strong sun. Keep leather at least 30 cm from vents and out of direct sun, which dries and fades it.

Children, pets and everyday wear

In family homes, the best upholstery care starts when you choose the fabric. Performance fabrics with stain resistant finishes, tighter weaves and mid tones handle daily life far better than pale linen or loose bouclé. Removable, washable loose covers are worth considering for the most used sofa.

For pets, brush or vacuum hair often, keep claws trimmed and use a washable throw on a favourite spot. Pulled threads should be trimmed level with sharp scissors, never pulled.

When to call a professional cleaner, and when to repair

Owner care keeps fabrics in good condition, but deep cleaning upholstery and lined curtains is a job for a specialist cleaner with the right equipment. Choose one that tests fabrics before cleaning and asks about the cleaning code. The Fabric Room does not offer a cleaning service, so we cannot recommend a specific company.

Some problems cannot be cleaned away. If seat cushions have flattened, fabric has worn through or sun has faded the arms, foam replacement, repair or reupholstery will bring the piece back. See our repair guide or book a home visit for advice.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How often should I vacuum my sofa?

Once a week is a good routine in Dubai, because fine dust and sand settle into upholstery quickly and wear the fibres when people sit. Use a soft upholstery brush along the weave and the crevice tool in seams and under cushions. Use low suction on delicate fabrics.

How do I stop sofa cushions going flat?

Rotate and turn reversible cushions every week or two, and plump feather cushions every day. Sitting in different places also helps. If cushions stay flat after plumping, the foam or fill may have reached the end of its life and can be replaced without changing the sofa.

Can I put curtains in the washing machine?

Only unlined curtains whose care label allows it, such as many sheers. Lined, interlined and pinch pleat curtains should be professionally dry cleaned, because the layers can shrink at different rates and the pleats lose shape. Blackout linings should never be washed hot.

How do I protect my sofa from sun fading?

Use sheers, blinds or lined curtains during the brightest hours, and position the sofa out of direct sun where you can. Rotating cushions spreads any fading evenly. When choosing new fabric for a sunny room, ask for fabrics with good light fastness or solution dyed fibres.

What do upholstery cleaning codes mean?

Cleaning codes tell you which products are safe. W means water based cleaners, S means solvent based cleaners only, WS means either and X means vacuum only with professional cleaning. Always test any cleaner on a hidden area first and blot rather than rub.

How often should upholstery be professionally cleaned?

Roughly every 12 to 24 months for most homes, and more often with children, pets or a pale fabric. Regular vacuuming between cleans keeps dust from grinding into the fibres. Choose a specialist that tests the fabric first and follows the cleaning code.

Does The Fabric Room offer upholstery cleaning?

No. We make, repair and reupholster soft furnishings, and we give care advice for everything we make. For deep cleaning, use a specialist upholstery and curtain cleaner. If a piece is worn, faded or flattened beyond cleaning, we can help with foam replacement, repair or reupholstery.
