What are the main headboard designs?
Most upholstered headboard designs fall into a few families. Each can be adapted in height, width, edge detail and fabric, which is why bespoke headboards give so much more choice than ready made ones.
| Style | What it looks like | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Plain panel | Flat padded rectangle, sometimes with piping | Modern, minimal rooms, bold fabrics |
| Vertical channels | Padded vertical flutes stitched in rows | Contemporary bedrooms, tall ceilings |
| Horizontal channels | Padded horizontal bands | Wide low headboards, hotel style rooms |
| Deep buttoned | Diamond pattern of buttons and folds, as on a Chesterfield | Classic and traditional rooms, velvet |
| Tufted without buttons | Soft indents in a grid | Softer classic look, easier to dust |
| Curved or arched | Rounded top or fully curved silhouette | Soft modern schemes, bouclé and velvet |
| Scalloped | Repeated rounded lobes along the top | Playful or vintage looks, children's rooms |
| Wingback | Headboard with side wings that wrap the pillows | Statement beds, reading in bed |
| Framed | Upholstered centre inside a timber or metal frame | Transitional and classic rooms |
| Wall panel | Full width padded panels on the wall | Large bedrooms, double height spaces |
What height should a headboard be?
Headboard height is measured from the floor. Start with your mattress height, which in most beds is 50 to 60 cm from the floor including the base. A headboard should show at least 50 cm above the mattress so pillows rest against it rather than above it. For sitting up to read, 60 to 70 cm above the mattress is more comfortable.
In Dubai villas with ceilings of 3 m or more, a taller headboard of 150 to 180 cm, or a full height wall panel, keeps the bed in proportion with the room. In apartments with lower ceilings, 120 to 140 cm is usually right.
| Height from floor | Effect | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 100 to 120 cm | Low and relaxed | Platform beds, low ceilings, under windows |
| 120 to 140 cm | Standard, balanced | Most bedrooms and apartments |
| 140 to 160 cm | Tall, hotel feel | Master bedrooms, ceilings around 3 m |
| 160 cm and above | Statement | Villas, high ceilings, extra tall headboard designs |
| Floor to ceiling | Architectural | Wall panel headboards, double height rooms |
Headboard sizes by bed size
Most beds in the UAE follow European mattress sizes. A headboard is normally 5 to 10 cm wider than the bed frame, or much wider when it extends behind bedside tables. Always measure the bed frame rather than the mattress, as frames are often a few centimetres larger.
| Bed | Typical mattress | Headboard width |
|---|---|---|
| Single | 90 or 100 x 200 cm | 100 to 110 cm |
| Double | 140 x 200 cm | 150 to 155 cm |
| Queen | 160 x 200 cm | 165 to 175 cm |
| King | 180 x 200 cm | 185 to 195 cm |
| Super king | 200 x 200 cm | 205 to 215 cm |
| Extended to include bedside tables | Any | Bed width plus both tables, often 280 to 350 cm |

Upholstered headboard or full upholstered bed?
An upholstered headboard can be fixed to an existing bed or to the wall, so it is the simplest way to change a bedroom. A full upholstered bed covers the base, side rails and footboard in fabric too, which gives a more finished look and hides the mechanics of the bed.
If your bed frame is sound, a new headboard is usually the better value. If the base is tired, an upholstered bed with a matching headboard creates one coherent piece. We make both, along with ottoman benches for the foot of the bed. See our headboards page for options.
Do you need a headboard?
A bed without a headboard can look intentional in a minimal room, but most people miss one quickly. A headboard stops pillows slipping into the gap against the wall, protects paint from hair oils and gives a comfortable surface to sit up against. It also anchors the bed visually, which matters in larger bedrooms where a bed can look lost.
If you prefer a slim look, a low upholstered panel of 100 to 110 cm or a single wall mounted cushion strip gives the comfort without the bulk.
Wall panel and wall mounted headboards
Wall mounted headboards hang on the wall with a concealed bracket rather than attaching to the bed. This lets the bed move for cleaning without the headboard shifting or rattling, and allows heights and widths that a bed frame could not support. A strong cleat fixing spreads the load along the wall.
Wall panel headboards take this further, with several padded panels running the full width of the wall, sometimes to the ceiling. Panels can be plain, channelled or framed with a reveal between each one. They also soften sound, which helps in bedrooms with hard marble or tiled floors common in Dubai villas.
Before we fit to a wall, we check for pipes and cables, and plan around sockets, switches and bedside lights. Integrated reading lights and USB points can be built into the panel if planned early.
Which fabric is best for a headboard?
Headboards take little abrasion compared with a sofa, so a fabric rated around 15,000 Martindale rubs is usually enough. The real risks are hair oils, skin products and sun fade from a nearby window. Darker or mid tones hide marks better than pale linen, and performance fabrics wipe clean.
| Fabric | Look | Practical notes |
|---|---|---|
| Velvet | Rich, deep colour | Shows pressure marks, beautiful on buttoned and channelled designs |
| Linen or linen blend | Relaxed, natural | Can crease and mark, best in blends |
| Bouclé | Textured, soft | Suits curved headboards, can snag with pets |
| Performance weave | Woven, matt | Stain resistant, ideal for children and rentals |
| Leather or faux leather | Sleek, tailored | Wipes clean, can feel cool or warm with the season |
Can the cover be removed?
Removable headboard covers are possible on simple panel shapes. Buttoned and channelled designs are fixed, so choose a fabric that can be spot cleaned. Our fabric guide and upholstery fabric guide explain rub counts and finishes.
Bed headboard design ideas by room
Bring the headboard fabric into the room elsewhere, such as cushions, a bench at the foot of the bed or the lining of made to measure curtains. That repetition makes the scheme feel planned.
- Master bedroom with high ceiling: tall channelled headboard or wall panel running behind the bedside tables
- Guest bedroom: a plain panel in a durable mid tone fabric, easy to live with for years
- Children's room: scalloped or curved shape in a performance fabric, with rounded corners
- Rental apartment: a wall mounted headboard that can be removed when you move
- Small bedroom: a slim wall panel with built in reading lights to save space on bedside tables
Edge details and finishing touches
Small details decide whether a headboard looks bespoke or bought off a shelf. Piping in the same fabric gives a crisp outline; contrast piping draws the eye to the shape. A double welt finishes the edge of framed headboards neatly where fabric meets timber.
Decorative nail heads or studs suit classic and industrial looks, either individually set or as a continuous trim. Buttons can be covered in the main fabric or a contrast. On channelled headboards, the width of each channel changes the mood: narrow channels of 8 to 10 cm look tailored, wide channels of 15 to 20 cm look soft and relaxed.
Legs or struts matter on floor standing headboards. They should be long enough to bolt securely to the bed frame and finished in fabric or timber where they show below the mattress.
How a bespoke headboard is made
A good headboard starts with a solid frame, usually timber or plywood, with a foam layer cut to the design and a wadding layer for a smooth finish. Channels and buttons are planned on the frame before the fabric goes on, and patterned fabric is centred.
Our process is simple. We visit with the fabric library, measure the bed and wall and send a written quote within 24 hours. A 50% deposit books a fixed fitting date. Each headboard is made to order by our craftspeople, inspected and photographed before delivery, then fitted by our team. Try shapes and fabrics first in the The Fabric Room Design Studio.
