What is upholstery fabric?
Upholstery fabric is fabric made to be stretched over furniture and sat on every day. Compared with curtain or dress fabric it is heavier, more tightly woven and tested for abrasion, so it holds its shape under tension and resists wear from friction. Most upholstery fabric is around 140 cm wide.
Good upholstery fabric has a stated rub count, a cleaning code and a fibre content. These three facts tell you more about how a fabric will perform than its colour or price. If a fabric has none of them listed, ask before you choose it for a sofa.
Curtain fabric can look similar on the roll, but it is not designed for abrasion and will wear through quickly on a seat. Keep it for curtains and lighter scatter cushions.
Martindale rub counts: how durable does sofa fabric need to be?
The Martindale test rubs a fabric sample against a standard abrasive in a figure of eight motion until it shows wear. The number of cycles it survives is its rub count. Higher numbers mean more durable fabric. Use this table to match the rating to the job.
| Martindale rubs | Rating | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|
| 10,000 to 15,000 | Light domestic | Decorative chairs, headboards, scatter cushions |
| 15,000 to 25,000 | General domestic | Sofas and chairs in occasional or formal rooms |
| 25,000 plus | Heavy domestic | Main family sofas, majlis seating, daily use |
| 40,000 plus | Commercial | Hotels, offices, restaurants and very heavy home use |
Rub count is not the whole story
A very high rub count does not guarantee a fabric will look good for years. Pilling, snagging, fading and staining are tested separately. A loose weave with a high rub count can still snag on a cat's claws. Use rub count as a minimum, then judge the weave, fibre and finish.
How to choose upholstery fabric for a sofa
Start with how the sofa will be used, then narrow by look. Ask four questions before you fall for a swatch.
Who sits on it, and how often? A family sofa used every evening needs heavy domestic fabric. A formal sitting room sofa can take something more delicate. Does it sit in direct sun? Sofas near tall villa windows need fade resistant fabric or sheer curtains to filter the light. Are there pets or children? If so, choose a tight weave and a fabric that can be cleaned with water. How will you clean it? Check the cleaning code before you buy.
Bring the swatch home and look at it in the room, at different times of day. Dubai light is strong and changes colour noticeably from morning to evening. At The Fabric Room we bring our fabric library to your home on a home visit for exactly this reason.
Finally, think about the frame and the detail. Heavy, stiff fabrics suit tailored shapes with crisp piping. Softer, drapier fabrics suit relaxed shapes and loose covers. Deep buttoning needs a fabric that folds cleanly, and large patterns need extra metres to match across cushions, which affects the sofa upholstery cost.

Which is the best fabric for sofa upholstery? Types compared
Each main fabric type has a clear set of strengths and weaknesses. This comparison covers the fabrics most often chosen for sofas in Dubai. There is no single winner: the right fabric is the one whose watch outs do not matter in your home.
| Fabric | Strengths | Watch outs | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Performance woven (polyester, acrylic, olefin) | Durable, stain resistant, often water cleanable | Feel varies; check the hand before choosing | Family sofas, majlis, rentals |
| Linen and linen blends | Natural, breathable, relaxed look | Creases, fades in sun, stains easily | Formal or adult rooms out of direct sun |
| Velvet (polyester or cotton) | Rich colour, soft, polyester velvet is hard wearing | Pile crushes and marks; cotton velvet fades | Statement sofas, chairs, headboards |
| Boucle | Textured, warm, on trend | Loops snag on claws and jewellery | Accent chairs, pet free rooms |
| Chenille | Soft, durable, good for daily use | Can pile if low quality | Main sofas |
| Leather | Durable, wipes clean, ages well | Dries and cracks without conditioning; scratches | Busy homes, studies, family rooms |

Performance fabrics, linen, velvet, boucle and leather in detail
Here is what each fabric is like to live with in a Dubai home, where dust, strong light, humid coastal summers and constant air conditioning all affect how upholstery ages.
Performance fabrics
Performance fabrics are engineered to resist stains, wear and fading. Many are woven from solution dyed acrylic, olefin or polyester, which means the colour is added to the fibre before it is spun, so it runs right through rather than sitting on the surface. Spills bead up long enough to be blotted. For most family sofas these are the safest choice.
Linen
Linen gives a soft, natural, slightly crumpled look that many designers love. Pure linen creases, stains and fades in direct sun. A linen blend with cotton or polyester holds its shape better. Linen works well on loose sofa covers that can be removed and cleaned.
Velvet
Velvet has a dense, cut pile that catches light. Polyester velvet is surprisingly durable and often has a high rub count. Cotton velvet is softer but fades and marks more easily. All velvet shows pressure marks where people sit, which brush out but are part of its character.
Boucle
Boucle is woven from looped yarn, which gives it its nubbly texture. Those loops are its weakness: claws, jewellery and zips catch and pull them. It is best on accent chairs and ottomans in rooms without pets.
Leather
Leather is durable and easy to wipe, but Dubai air conditioning dries it out. Condition it every 6 to 12 months and keep it out of direct sun to prevent cracking and fading. Aniline leather is soft but marks easily; protected or pigmented leather is better for busy homes.
What is the best sofa fabric for pets and kids?
For homes with dogs, cats and children, choose a tightly woven performance fabric with a rub count of 25,000 or more and a W or WS cleaning code. Tight weaves give claws nothing to hook into. Microfibre and flat weave polyester are good choices because hair brushes off easily.
Avoid boucle, loose weaves and loop pile fabrics, which snag. Avoid pure linen and silk, which stain. Mid tones and subtle patterns hide marks better than very pale or very dark plain fabrics. Leather resists hair and spills but shows scratches, so it suits dogs better than cats.
Removable, zipped cushion covers help too. They let you clean or replace the part that takes the most wear. Ask for zips on all seat and back cushions.
Sun fading: choosing fabric for sofas near windows
Dubai sun is strong all year, and UV light fades fabric even through glass. A sofa in front of a tall villa window or a double height living room can fade unevenly in a single season, with the seat backs and arms facing the glass changing first.
Natural fibres such as linen, cotton and silk fade fastest. Cotton velvet is also vulnerable. Solution dyed acrylic and olefin resist UV fading because the colour goes right through the fibre. These are also the fabrics used for outdoor cushions, and many now feel soft enough for indoor sofas.
Window treatments make a big difference. Sheer curtains filter light without darkening the room, and blackout curtains or roller blinds can be closed during the brightest hours. Rotating loose cushions also spreads any fading evenly.
Upholstery cleaning codes explained
Most upholstery fabric carries a cleaning code. It tells you what can safely be used on it. Check it before you buy, and before anyone cleans your sofa.
| Code | Meaning | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| W | Water based cleaners | Easiest for spills; best for families |
| S | Solvent based cleaners only | Water can leave rings; use a professional |
| WS or SW | Water or solvent based cleaners | Flexible; spot test first |
| X | Vacuum or brush only | No liquids; not suited to busy homes |
