What types of sofa covers are there?
Sofa covers range from a throw tucked over the seat to a fully tailored loose cover that looks like upholstery. The two that matter for most homes are stretch covers and tailored loose covers, also called slipcovers. Fitted cushion covers, which replace only the seat and back cushion covers, are a third option when the frame upholstery is still in good condition.
| Type | How it fits | Look | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Throw or protector | Laid over seats and back | Casual | Short term protection |
| Stretch cover | Elastic knit pulled over the frame, tucked into gaps | Fitted but generic, shows the frame shape | Quick cover up, rentals, temporary protection |
| Tailored loose cover | Cut and sewn to one sofa, with zips or ties | Close to upholstery, tailored detail | Long term use, pale sofas, families |
| Sofa cushion covers only | New covers for seat and back cushions | Matches or contrasts the frame | Worn cushion fabric on a sound frame |
Stretch covers vs tailored loose covers
Stretch sofa covers are usually made from a polyester and elastane knit. They are sold in standard sizes for 1, 2, 3 and 4 seater sofas, with elastic hems and foam sticks that tuck into the seat gaps. They are fast to fit and easy to wash, but the fabric is thin, the fit shifts when you sit and the look rarely matches the room.
Tailored loose covers are made to measure from upholstery or heavy cotton and linen fabric. Each panel is cut to the sofa, with piping, pleats, a skirt or a fitted hem, and fastened with concealed zips or ties. They look like the sofa was made that way. They cost more and take longer, but last for years and can be washed or dry cleaned.
| Stretch cover | Tailored loose cover | |
|---|---|---|
| Fit | Approximate, can slip | Exact to one sofa |
| Fabric | Thin elastic knit | Upholstery weight fabric of your choice |
| Durability | Moderate | High, depends on fabric rub count |
| Detail | None | Piping, pleats, skirts, contrast trims |
| Time | Off the shelf | Made to order |
| Washing | Machine washable | Wash or dry clean depending on fabric |
3 seater, 2 seater and L shape sofa covers
A 3 seater sofa cover is the most common request, and the easiest to fit off the shelf, because three seat sofas fall in a fairly narrow width range. Even so, arm shape and back height vary widely, so stretch covers often bunch at the arms or ride up at the back.
An L shape sofa cover is harder. Corner sofas vary in which side the chaise or return sits, the length of each section and whether the corner seat is square or angled. Stretch covers for L shape sofas usually come in two pieces and rarely sit well at the join. A tailored cover is cut section by section, so the corner and chaise fit as closely as the straight runs.
For recliners and sofa beds, covers need openings or split panels that allow the mechanism to work. These are almost always tailored.
Sofa seat covers and sofa cushion covers are a useful middle option. If the arms and back of the sofa still look good but the seat cushions are worn, stained or faded, new cushion covers alone can restore the sofa at a fraction of the work of a full cover.

How to measure a sofa for a cover
Measure with a soft tape and write each figure in centimetres. For stretch covers, the width from outside arm to outside arm is the key measurement. For tailored covers, we take a full set on site, but these are the measurements that matter.
| Measurement | Where to measure |
|---|---|
| Overall width | Outside of one arm to outside of the other, at the widest point |
| Overall depth | Front of the arm to the back of the sofa |
| Back height | Floor to the top of the back |
| Arm height | Floor to the top of the arm |
| Seat height | Floor to the top of the seat cushion |
| Seat cushions | Width, depth and thickness of each cushion |
| L shape sections | Length of each side along the back, chaise length and depth |
Note the details
Photograph the sofa from the front, side and back, and note leg height, arm shape, whether back cushions are loose or fixed and which side a chaise sits. These details decide whether a cover will fit well.
What is the best fabric for a sofa cover?
The best slipcover material is a tightly woven fabric with enough weight to hang well and enough stability to keep its shape after washing. Choose a fabric rated at 15,000 Martindale rubs or more for general home use, and 25,000 or more for a family sofa used every day.
| Fabric | Strengths | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Cotton drill or canvas | Strong, washable, crisp | Shrinks unless prewashed |
| Linen and linen blends | Relaxed look, cool to sit on | Creases, shrinks, best as a blend |
| Polyester performance weave | Stain resistant, colourfast, stable | Less natural feel |
| Velvet | Rich colour | Usually dry clean only, harder to fit as a loose cover |
| Stretch knit | Easy fit | Thin, pills with wear |
Waterproof sofa covers
A waterproof sofa cover usually has a laminated backing or a water repellent finish. Full waterproof backing protects against accidents with toddlers and pets but makes the cover warm to sit on and noisy. For most homes, a performance fabric with a stain and water repellent finish gives better comfort with good protection against spills.
How to wash sofa covers without shrinking them
Natural fabrics such as cotton and linen can shrink a few per cent in the first wash. For washable loose covers, we recommend prewashing the fabric before cutting, so the finished cover keeps its size. Always check the fabric care label before washing.
Wash on a cool, gentle cycle and avoid tumble drying, which shrinks and sets creases. Dry in shade rather than direct Dubai sun, which fades colour quickly. Linen covers are easiest to refit when slightly damp, as the fabric relaxes back into shape on the sofa. Wash all pieces of a cover together, so colour changes evenly.
Covers in velvet, wool blends or fabrics with a backing should be professionally dry cleaned. See our care guide for day to day advice.
Sofa covers in Dubai homes
Sofa covers are popular in Dubai for a few reasons. Many apartments are rented furnished, and a tailored cover lets tenants change a landlord's sofa without altering it. Pale sofas are hard to keep clean with sand and dust carried in from outside. Sun through large windows fades upholstery, and a cover protects the original fabric beneath.
Families also use covers seasonally: a light linen cover for summer, a heavier weave for winter gatherings. Keeping a second set means one is always clean.
Homes with pets need particular care. Cat claws catch on loose weaves and bouclé, so a tight, flat weave or microfibre performance fabric is better. A fitted hem rather than a long skirt stops pets sliding underneath, and a darker or mid tone hides hair between washes.
When to choose a cover and when to reupholster
A cover makes sense when the frame, springs and foam are sound and you want protection or a new look. If the seat sags, the foam has collapsed or the frame creaks, a cover will only hide the problem. In that case, reupholstery or foam replacement is the better investment.
