What are the most common sofa faults?
Sofas fail in predictable ways. Knowing which fault you have tells you whether it needs a quick repair or a bigger job. This table lists the faults we see most often and what usually causes them.
| Fault | Likely cause | Usually repairable? |
|---|---|---|
| Seat sags or dips | Broken serpentine springs, slack or torn webbing, flat foam | Yes |
| Creaking or a wobbly frame | Loose joints, failed glue, split corner blocks | Yes |
| Arm or back moves when pushed | Loose or cracked frame joint at the arm or back rail | Yes, if the timber is sound |
| Broken or loose leg | Stripped fixing, split timber, broken leg plate | Yes |
| Flat or lumpy cushions | Worn foam, compressed fibre, shifted filling | Yes |
| Split seam or torn fabric | Stitching worn, fabric strained at stress points | Seams yes; large tears may need a new panel |
| Broken cushion zip | Worn or snapped zip | Yes |
| Leather scratches, scuffs, colour loss | Wear, pets, sun, dry air | Usually yes |
| Peeling faux leather | Surface coating breaking down | No, needs recovering |
| Recliner will not open or close | Cable, handle, spring or mechanism fault | Often yes |
Sofa frame repair
The frame is the skeleton of the sofa, and most frame faults are joints that have loosened over time. Glue dries out, screws loosen and corner blocks split, especially on sofas that are dragged across floors or moved between homes.
A proper sofa frame repair means opening the upholstery to reach the joint, cleaning out old glue, regluing and clamping, and adding new corner blocks or screws where needed. A cracked rail is reinforced or replaced with new timber. Simply driving extra staples or screws through the fabric does not fix a loose joint and often splits the timber further.
Particleboard frames are the exception. Once particleboard cracks or the screw holes crumble, it cannot hold a reliable fixing. In that case a repair may not last, and we will tell you so.
Sagging seats, springs and sofa cushion repair
A sagging seat is the most common reason people search for sofa repair near me. There are three possible causes, and they often appear together.
Springs
Most sofas use serpentine springs, the zigzag steel springs that run front to back across the seat. They can snap, or the clips holding them to the frame can break or pull out. Sofa spring repair means replacing the broken springs or clips and checking the rail they are fixed to.
Webbing
Some sofas use elastic webbing instead of springs. Over time it loses tension or tears. Replacing the webbing and setting the right tension restores the seat.
Cushions
If the base is sound but the cushions are flat, the fix is new foam. Sofa cushion repair includes replacing foam, refilling or rewrapping fibre, fixing split seams and replacing broken zips. Our sofa foam guide explains which foam to choose, and our foam replacement service handles it.

Can torn fabric, seams and zips be repaired?
Split seams are one of the simplest repairs. Stitching wears at stress points, such as the front edge of a seat cushion or where an arm meets the back. Our craftspeople reopen the seam, restitch it with upholstery thread and close it so the repair follows the original line.
Torn fabric is harder. A small tear near a seam can sometimes be drawn in and stitched. A larger tear in the middle of a panel usually means replacing that panel. If the original fabric is still available, the new panel will match closely, though older fabric that has faded in Dubai sun may look slightly different from new stock. Where a match is not possible, recovering the cushion or the whole sofa is the cleaner result.
Broken zips are replaced with new upholstery zips of the right length. While a cushion is open it is a good moment to check the foam and fibre wrap, since a zip often fails because an overstuffed or tired cushion has been strained.
Leather sofa repair and faux leather
Real leather is very repairable. Scratches and scuffs can be filled, smoothed and recoloured. Faded or patchy areas, common on sofas near Dubai windows, can be recoloured to match. Small tears can be backed and filled. Split seams can be restitched. Dry, cracked leather can often be improved, though deep cracking may need a panel replaced.
Leather sofa scratch repair is a frequent request in homes with pets. Light surface scratches often respond well to conditioning and recolouring. Deep claw marks can be filled but may still show on close inspection.
Faux leather, often called rexine in the UAE, is different. It is a fabric base with a plastic coating. When that coating starts to peel or flake, it cannot be repaired, because the surface itself is breaking down. The only lasting fix is to recover the sofa in new material through reupholstery.
Recliner sofa repair
Recliners add a mechanism to the frame, and that mechanism wears. Common faults on manual recliners are a pull handle that has gone slack, a snapped release cable, a footrest that will not close fully and a mechanism that has bent or loosened. Power recliners add a motor, switch and wiring.
Recliner sofa repair starts with finding the cause. A loose handle or cable is a straightforward fix. A bent mechanism or a power recliner fault may need a replacement part, and whether that part is available depends on the make. We assess the recliner on a home visit and confirm in writing what can be done before any work starts.
Recliner upholstery also wears in particular places, especially the footrest edges and the seat front. These can be repaired or recovered along with the mechanism.
Repair vs reupholster: which do you need?
Repair fixes a specific fault. Reupholstery replaces the fabric, foam and wadding and fixes the frame at the same time. The right choice depends on the condition of the whole sofa, not just the fault you noticed first.
Choose repair when the fabric is still in good condition and the problem is local: a broken spring, a loose arm, a broken zip or a scuffed leather panel. Choose reupholstery when the fabric is worn, faded or peeling, when several faults appear at once, or when you want a new look anyway. If the frame is particleboard or badly cracked, neither may be worth it. Our guide on whether it is worth reupholstering a sofa includes a decision table, and our cost guide explains what each involves.
| Situation | Best option |
|---|---|
| Good fabric, one structural fault | Repair |
| Good fabric, flat cushions | Foam replacement |
| Worn or faded fabric, sound frame | Reupholster |
| Peeling faux leather | Reupholster in new material |
| Several faults plus worn fabric | Reupholster with frame repair |
| Particleboard frame that has cracked | Consider a new or bespoke sofa |
How is a proper sofa repair done?
A proper repair fixes the cause, not the symptom. At The Fabric Room it follows the same steps every time.
First, a home visit across Dubai to inspect the sofa, find the cause and agree what will be done. You receive a written quote within 24 hours, stating the work, the materials and the date. Our craftspeople then open the upholstery to reach the fault, repair it with the right materials, and close and finish the upholstery neatly. Every repaired piece is inspected and photographed before it comes back to you, and our team returns and places it on the agreed date. All work carries our written workmanship guarantee.
What a proper repair avoids: staples or screws driven through the fabric into a loose joint, glue squeezed into a joint without cleaning or clamping, and foam patched over a broken spring. These hold for a short time and often make the real repair harder later.
Sofa repair Dubai: booking a repair with The Fabric Room
Dubai homes are hard on sofas. Air conditioning dries out leather and timber, sun fades and weakens fabric, and furniture is moved often between apartments and villas. Many faults we repair start with a move, when a sofa is lifted by its arms or dragged across a floor. To avoid this, always lift a sofa by the base frame, never by the arms or back, and remove the legs before it goes through a tight doorway or service lift.
The Fabric Room repairs sofas, armchairs, chairs, majlis seating and headboards across Dubai. See our sofa repair service and the areas we cover. To get a repair assessed, book a home visit or send photos on WhatsApp to +971 50 551 1768, Monday to Saturday, 9am to 7pm.
How to tell if your sofa can be repaired
- Do the lift test. Lift one front corner about 15 cm. If the opposite front leg lifts almost at once, the frame is rigid. If the frame twists, joints are loose, which is usually repairable on a timber frame.
- Check the frame material. Look under the sofa at the base rails. Solid timber or plywood can be repaired. Crumbling particleboard at screw holes is a sign a repair may not last.
- Press the seat deck. Remove the seat cushions and press down across the deck. Uneven dips, a snapping sound or a loose feel point to broken springs or slack webbing, both of which can be replaced.
- Push the arms and back. Push each arm and the back firmly. Movement or creaking at a joint means it needs regluing. A clean, solid feel means the frame is sound.
- Check the cushions. Unzip a seat cushion and squeeze the foam. If it crumbles, leaves dust or does not spring back, it needs replacing. If the foam is good, the sag is underneath.
- Inspect the surface. Look for split seams, tears, scuffs and peeling. Seams, scuffs and small leather tears are repairable. Peeling faux leather or badly worn fabric needs recovering.
- Photograph and send. Take clear photos of the whole sofa, the fault and the underside, and send them to us on WhatsApp. We will tell you whether repair or reupholstery makes sense before a home visit.
